Soil-structure interaction

The Teddington Riverside development that replaced the former studios presented some challenges due to its location adjacent to the River Thames. The apartment blocks are supported on basement raft foundations with a high water table and also interact with the vital river flood wall. The structural engineers needed support on soil-structure interaction modelling and a check on any effect on the river flood wall.

A 3D FEA model of all the apartment block basements, the groundwater regime and the river flood wall was created to provide raft foundation parameters to the structural engineers and predict the river flood wall displacement.

Highlights

  • Detailed study of the River Thames flood wall properties and water table fluctuations at the site.

  • 3D FEA model of all apartment block basements, groundwater levels and river flood wall.

  • Output of raft foundation displacement, heave pressure, groundwater pressure, bending moment and sping stiffness values provided to structural engineers.

  • River flood wall displacement predicted to be within acceptable limits.
