New and re-used pile group settlement
The Bower, Old Street mixed use development in London involved the refurbishment and extension of buildings supported on a mix of existing under-reamed piles and new straight shafted piles. Differential settlement between buildings was critical but predicting that was difficult on this complex pile group.
A 3D FEA model of the entire pile group, validated by pile testing, was used to predict differential settlements across the site such that they could be accommodated in the structural design.
