Space Forensics

Space Forensics

A major frustration in forensic engineering is the lack of data when a failure occurs unexpectedly because the need for the data was not known until it was too late.

However, earth observation satellites are recording images, including SAR, all the time and the European Space Agency is funding these pilot studies into the use of this data combined with engineering expertise in forensic engineering investigations.

Highlights

  • Unexpected failures often lack data for forensic investigation.

  • Retrospective determination of displacements and other parameters from satellite SAR data.

  • Back-analysis of failure events by numerical simulation informed by more data.

  • More reliable establishment of cause.
